Our Methodology

How We Grade
Ohio Roofers

Every contractor in our directory receives an independent A through F grade based on five factors we can verify from public data. We never accept payment to influence rankings, and no contractor can buy a better score.

The Process

How It Works

1

We Collect Data

Customer reviews, Ohio contractor registration, insurance verification, manufacturer certifications, and business details — all from public sources.

2

We Score Five Factors

Each contractor is evaluated across five weighted categories totaling 100 points, with reviews and credentials carrying the most weight.

3

We Assign a Grade

Points map to a letter grade from A (best) to F (insufficient data). Updated as new reviews, licensing changes, or closures are detected.

Scoring

The Five Factors

Each factor is weighted to reflect what matters most when hiring an Ohio roofing contractor.

Customer Reviews 30 PTS

We aggregate ratings from Google, the BBB, and roofing-specific platforms. But we don't just look at the star average — review volume, recency, and how the contractor responds to hail-claim disputes and warranty complaints all factor in. A shop with 200 reviews averaging 4.6 scores higher than one with 8 perfect reviews.

Credentials & Insurance 25 PTS

Ohio doesn't mandate a statewide roofing license, but most municipalities require contractor registration. We verify general liability insurance, workers' compensation, and manufacturer certifications from GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, and the metal-roofing majors. Certified installers unlock extended warranties that regular contractors can't offer.

Years of Experience 15 PTS

Years in business serving Ohio homeowners through real freeze-thaw cycles, hail seasons, and ice-dam winters. Ohio gets hit by opportunistic out-of-state storm chasers after every major hail event — longevity is one of the easiest ways to tell a durable local operation from a pop-up crew. New shops aren't penalized, just scored more cautiously.

Profile Completeness 15 PTS

Verified phone number, working website, clear county-level service area, published business hours, and ideally a portfolio of completed Ohio projects. Roofers who make it easy to reach them and understand what they do score higher than those with scattered or outdated information.

Specialization 15 PTS

Whether roofing is their core business, not a side service bolted onto a general remodeling or siding shop. Dedicated specialists tend to carry the right materials on the truck, train their crews on specific manufacturer systems, and honor warranties years later. Ohio homeowners comparing asphalt versus metal versus tile are best served by shops that install all three and can explain the trade-offs without a sales pitch.

Grade Scale

From A to F

Points are totaled and mapped to a letter grade. Only A and B contractors are featured prominently in our directory.

A
Outstanding (85–100 pts)

Excellent reviews, verified credentials, strong Ohio track record, dedicated roofing specialist with manufacturer certifications.

B
Strong (70–84 pts)

Solid reputation, good credentials, and clear specialization. A safe pick for most projects.

C
Average (55–69 pts)

Decent but with limited information or mixed reviews. Worth a second look — get multiple quotes.

D
Below Average (40–54 pts)

Sparse profile, very few reviews, or credential gaps. Verify insurance and registration directly before hiring.

F
Insufficient (under 40 pts)

Not enough public data to form a judgment. Not featured in our directory.

FAQ

The Fine Print

Can contractors pay to improve their grade?

No. Our grades are generated from public data and cannot be influenced by payment, advertising relationships, or listing claims. If a contractor disputes their grade, we review the underlying data — but the scoring formula applies equally to everyone.

How often are grades updated?

We refresh contractor data on a rolling basis. Major changes (new reviews, license updates, manufacturer certifications, business closures) are reflected in the next monthly grading pass.

Why isn't every roofer in Ohio listed?

We only list contractors with enough public data to score meaningfully. If a shop has no online presence, no reviews, and no verifiable credentials, there's nothing to grade — and nothing to recommend. We also exclude contractors with a clear pattern of unresolved complaints.

What about out-of-state storm chasers after a hail event?

Storm-chasing crews that follow hail events across state lines typically score poorly because they lack local reviews, local insurance filings, and a track record of honoring warranties after they leave. We strongly favor Ohio-based operations with physical addresses in the state.

What if I think a grade is wrong?

Send us the specifics through our contact page. If we find an error in the underlying data, we'll correct it and rerun the score. Corrections typically go live within a week.
